The southern half of Buchanan, a tiny northern is crisscrossed by leafy streets lined with well-tended homes. The northern half is another story: an industrial expanse that includes Con Edison switchyards, a gypsum manufacturing facility and Entergy’s Indian Point Energy Center, with its domed nuclear reactors set on 240 riverfront acres.
Buchanan Mayor Theresa Knickerbocker told the Times that the 1.4-square-mile village in the town of Cortlandt may lose nearly $3 million in annual revenue from Entergy, nearly half its operating budget. Tax hikes are anticipated.
Last November, the village surveyed its approximately 2,250 residents about possible service cuts. State, town and village task forces have been formed to investigate subsidies and support.
